TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Friday (Oct. 4) urged the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) to enhance its capabilities to provide local governments with more accurate information for decision-making.
Premier Cho's comments came as Typhoon Krathon's (山陀兒) slow movement led to multiple typhoon day holidays, sparking dissatisfaction among some employers and business owners due to a lack of wind and rain.
Cho, speaking before a Legislative Yuan (立法院) session, acknowledged the challenges these decisions pose. Reflecting on nearly 30 years of holiday mechanisms, he noted that local governments have historically based decisions on weather, transportation, and infrastructure needs.
He emphasized prioritizing public safety and property in decision-making, and highlighted the role of technology in enhancing weather forecasts. Cho expressed hope that the CWA could further refine its methods, enabling local governments to access more precise data.
According to FTV News (民視新聞網), Taiwan's GDP in 2023, calculated at NT$23 trillion, suggests a daily economic output of approximately NT$63 billion. Factoring in typhoon days and domestic markets, the daily loss is at least NT$31.5 billion.
