TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) released a report in October, recording 1,687 traffic fatalities from January to July 2024, with Taichung City leading at 175 incidents. The city also reported the highest pedestrian fatalities nationwide, highlighting a pressing safety concern.
Despite a decrease of 26 fatalities from the previous year, Taichung still recorded the highest number of reduced fatal accidents. The total number of traffic incidents during this period reached 225,432, with 1,679 fatalities within 30 days of the accidents. Following Taichung, Kaohsiung reported 173 cases, Taoyuan had 166, Tainan recorded 153, and New Taipei had 145.
Taoyuan's traffic incidents rose by 34 compared to the same period last year, reaching 166 cases, indicating worsening conditions. In pedestrian fatalities, Taichung led with 32, followed by Taoyuan with 30, Kaohsiung with 18, Tainan with 17, New Taipei with 15, and Taipei with 14.
Taipei saw a decrease in pedestrian fatalities to 14, while Hsinchu experienced an increase to 12 cases. Overall, incidents involving drunk driving, children, motorcyclists, and the elderly have significantly decreased compared to last year.
Accident analysis revealed that drivers often cause accidents between 6 a.m. and noon due to distractions or nervousness. Authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant during these hours to prevent further tragedies.
