TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) announced Monday (Sept. 30) that the city government will assess Typhoon Karathon's (山陀兒) impact and communicate with neighboring counties before deciding on potential class and work suspensions at 8 p.m.
Typhoon Karathon is approaching, and Taipei's weather team predicts the strongest winds and rain on Oct. 2 and 3. Taipei's mountainous areas may meet the suspension criteria, but flat areas may not.
Chiang chaired a typhoon response meeting this morning, addressing the storm's severity. Many social media users have since urged him to declare a typhoon day off. He acknowledged these requests but noted that the weather team expects the most significant impact on Oct. 2 and 3.
Chiang emphasized the importance of closely monitoring the typhoon's path and its potential effects on Taipei. Typhoon Karathon may make landfall in Pingtung or Kaohsiung by tomorrow evening, with the most substantial impact on Taipei expected on Oct. 2 and 3.
If Taipei falls within the typhoon's warning zone, the risk of disaster will increase. Chiang held a preparedness meeting this morning, instructing relevant departments to enhance their readiness efforts. He stressed the need for thorough implementation and maintaining a cautious yet stringent approach.
