TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese table tennis player Cheng I-ching (鄭怡靜) swept Australian player Yangzi Liu (劉楊子) in straight sets on Sunday (Sept. 29) during the first round of the 2024 China Smash (2024WTT中國大滿貫). Cheng's victory propels her into the women's singles round of 32.
Ranked No. 10 globally, Cheng defeated Liu, who is ranked No. 35. In the next round, she will face Dutch player Britt Eerland.
Chen Szu-yu (陳思羽) also had a busy week, competing in three events. She partnered with Hong Kong's Lee Ho-ching (李皓晴) in women's doubles and Singapore's Yew En Koen Pang (馮耀恩) in mixed doubles. Chen and Yew secured a spot in the mixed doubles round 16 earlier.
Chen triumphed in her women's singles first-round match against 16-year-old Egyptian player Hana Goda, marking her second victory.
In men's singles, Kao Cheng-jui (高承睿) defeated French player Simon Gauzy to advance to the round of 32. Kao's win adds to Taiwan's strong showing in the tournament.
