TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a land warning at 2:30 a.m. Monday (Sept. 30) as Typhoon Krathon (山陀兒) neared southern Taiwan. The storm's outer bands will impact Taitung, Pingtung, and the Hengchun Peninsula.
Meteorologist Yeh Chih-chun (葉致均) warned that the typhoon's outer circulation will bring heavy rain to Greater Taipei's mountainous areas, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula.
The typhoon's effects will be more pronounced on Tuesday and Wednesday, with rain expected nationwide. Northern, eastern, and central-southern mountainous regions may see heavy torrential rain, while eastern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, Pingtung, and northern mountainous areas could face torrential rain or worse.
By Thursday, the typhoon's outer bands will still affect northern and eastern Taiwan, causing localized heavy rain, though other areas will see easing rainfall. From Friday to Sunday, the northeast monsoon will keep northern and eastern Taiwan wet.
Yeh highlighted the typhoon's potential to reach the upper limit of a moderate typhoon and possibly become a severe typhoon.
He predicted that the storm's eye would make contact with the Hengchun Peninsula this afternoon and affect the entire island.
The typhoon is moving northwest and may turn north-northeast on Tuesday, possibly making landfall in Kaohsiung or Pingtung, though its exact path remains uncertain.
The CWA urged heightened vigilance in Taitung, Pingtung, and the Hengchun Peninsula. They also advised caution for vessels operating in the southern Taiwan Strait, southeastern Taiwan waters, Bashi Channel, and Dongsha Island waters.
