TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tropical Storm Yagi (摩羯) positioned itself 450 kilometers southwest of Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻) in the South China Sea early Wednesday (Sept. 4) morning, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Moving westward, the tropical storm will head toward the Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan in the South China Sea, posing no direct threat to Taiwan.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) expects Tropical Storm Yagi to intensify to a moderate storm as it heads toward Guangdong and Hainan. Wu added that recent models indicate potential typhoon development east of Taiwan and southwest of Guam next Tuesday (Sept. 10). However, the atmospheric conditions remain complex, leading to varying model simulations.
The CWA cautioned that Yagi's outer bands will bring intermittent showers to northern Keelung, the greater Taipei mountainous areas, eastern regions, southern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Afternoon thunderstorms may also occur in central and southern mountainous areas, though the rainfall will be brief and localized.
More importantly, the CWA warned of long waves along the eastern coast, including Orchid Island (蘭嶼) and Green Island (綠島), urging the public to exercise caution during coastal activities. Over the next few days, Yagi's moisture will increase the likelihood of scattered showers in eastern and southern Taiwan, with occasional light rain in the north.
From Friday to next Tuesday (Sept. 6-10), Taiwan will experience higher humidity and cloud cover, with sporadic short-term rainfall across various regions. Due to localized convection, afternoon thunderstorms may develop, necessitating vigilance.
