TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan and its outlying islands, including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, will experience partly cloudy to sunny skies on Friday (Aug. 30), according to the Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署). However, unstable afternoon weather, with potential localized thunderstorms and heavy rain, will be present across mountainous and flat areas.
Temperatures will range from 32 to 35 degrees Celsius, with Taipei, Hualien, Taitung, and southern counties reaching up to 36 degrees.
Typhoon No. 10, Shanshan (珊珊), weakened to a tropical storm at 2 a.m. Friday after making landfall in Kagoshima, Japan, on Thursday (Aug. 29). The storm's center, now 120 kilometers northeast of Nagasaki, moves towards Shikoku and Honshu.
A Facebook weather reporting page, WeatherRisk (天氣風險), noted that Taiwan's atmospheric conditions remain complex and variable through the weekend, with southern winds prevailing. Afternoon thunderstorms will affect mountainous and adjacent areas.
High temperatures of 33-34 degrees are expected, with extreme highs of 36 degrees in the Taipei Basin, central and southern inland areas, and Hualien-Taitung valleys. CWA advises outdoor workers to stay hydrated and take sun protection measures.
On Saturday (Aug. 31) and Sunday (Sept. 1), weather patterns will shift to northeasterly winds, reducing overall moisture and stabilizing northern flatland weather, though mountain areas may still see isolated showers.
Central and southern regions will remain less stable, with localized showers in the mornings and evenings and afternoon thunderstorms primarily near mountains but potentially affecting flatlands.
This summer weather pattern might continue until Monday (Sept. 2). Meanwhile, a tropical cloud cluster east of the Philippines could develop into Typhoon No. 11, Yagi (摩羯), which may move north before veering west or northwest, potentially passing near Taiwan. WeatherRisk emphasized that more reliable forecasts will emerge by Sunday or Monday as the system's structure becomes clearer.
