TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) on Friday (Sept. 27) reported that a low-pressure system south of the Ryukyu Islands intensified into Tropical Depression TD22 at 2 a.m. They expect it to become Typhoon Krathon by early Saturday.
TD21 is forecasted to strengthen into Typhoon Yagi tonight, but it poses no direct threat to Taiwan, the CWA added.
Meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩) noted that currently, two tropical depressions, TD21 and TD22, are active in the Northwestern Pacific.
He highlighted that TD22 would likely develop into a typhoon by early Saturday potentially reaching at least moderate typhoon strength with a storm radius of 150 kilometers or more.
Lin warned that Typhoon Krathon, due to its proximity, will start impacting Taiwan's weather from the weekend, with the most significant effects expected from next Monday to Wednesday.
Lin also cautioned that due to its close position, there is a chance of a sea typhoon warning being issued. The unclear guiding flow environment could slow down Typhoon Krathon, prolonging its impact on Taiwan.
The most substantial wind and rain will occur from Monday to Wednesday with the typhoon expected to move away by Thursday.
Currently, the northeast monsoon is increasing moisture, leading to sporadic showers and thunderstorms in northern, eastern, and Hengchun Peninsula regions, as well as Matsu.
The CWA advises residents to be vigilant of short-duration heavy rainfall, particularly in Keelung's north coast, Greater Taipei's mountainous areas, and eastern regions.
In central and southern regions, as well as Penghu and Kinmen, expect partly cloudy to sunny weather with isolated afternoon thunderstorms.
