TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad has chosen Taiwan as its host country for the first time this summer, marking a significant milestone in the program's history spanning 66 years. Since its inception in 2008, the renowned scholarly research program has taken place in 36 countries, but Taiwan's rise to global eminence has made it an ideal destination.

On Monday (June 12), scholars, journalists, and educators from the United States and Taiwan gathered to discuss "Taiwan's rise to global eminence." This event was a highlight of the four-week program, fostering intellectual exchange and strengthening ties between American and Taiwanese participants.

Randall Nadeau, executive director of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (FSE), Fulbright Taiwan, emphasized the deep-rooted connection between the United States and Taiwan, which has been the foundation of the Fulbright-Hays seminars. Nadeau highlighted the program's vision of enhancing relations between the two nations.

In preparation for Taiwan's upcoming presidential election in January 2024, 16 grantees received comprehensive insights into Taiwan's political landscape and historical significance before their month-long visits. Engaging with scholars, activists, and individuals involved in the political system further enriched their understanding.

Nadeau unveiled the Fulbright Foundation's plan to extend invitations to numerous delegations, scholars, journalists, and student groups, further bolstering the program's involvement in Taiwan. He emphasized the foundation's commitment to actively engage with political parties and candidates, aiming to contribute to Taiwan's democratic process.

Recognizing Taiwan's growing significance in the global economy, Nadeau also acknowledged the increased presence of international media. This development presents visiting grantees with invaluable opportunities to engage in in-depth discussions with leading journalists, providing a unique perspective on Taiwan's dynamic society.

Nadeau's announcement of over 400 grantees scheduled to visit Taiwan in the upcoming year underscores the robustness of U.S.-Taiwan relations, which he deemed "stronger than ever." Expressing optimism, he described the desire for the long-standing partnership between the foundation and Taiwan to endure another century.
