NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi, the Kuomintang (KMT) candidate for the 2024 presidential election, expressed his thoughts on his potential running mate on the sidelines of a city council meeting held on Thursday (May 18).

Speculation surrounds two potential choices, Hon Hai Founder Terry Gou and former president of the National Taiwan University, Kuan Chung-ming.

When questioned by reporters, Hou commended both Gou and Kuan, saying, "I have great admiration for Gou, especially considering his company's headquarters in Tucheng, New Taipei City."

He further praised Gou's significant contributions to the economy and unwavering dedication to the country and its land. Hou also emphasized their shared values and beliefs.

Regarding Kuan, Hou remarked, "During his tenure as the president of the National Taiwan University, he earned immense respect from teachers and students alike. He is someone we can learn from."

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators called for Hou's resignation as New Taipei City Mayor following the nomination. However, Hou reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the city government's 2030 visions for New Taipei City.

Instead of resigning, media reported that he plans to take a short leave around September, with one of the city's deputy mayors temporarily assuming his duties.
