TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Wang Mei-hua, emphasized on Monday (June 12) that the government's goal to become nuclear-free by 2025 remains unchanged.
Speaking at the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in Taipei, Wang stressed that "amid our discussions, our general direction remains the same."
She added: "Public consensus is crucial for progress regarding the utilization of nuclear-generated power after exhausting all other efforts."
Wang's statement came after ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Lai Ching-te came under fire for implying that nuclear power plants could still be reactivated in case of emergencies.
His statement seemingly went against the DPP's strong stance for becoming a nuclear-free nation, leading many to question whether the ruling party was wavering in their attitudes before the presidential election.
In that regard, Wang attempted to clear the air but remains vague regarding the "public consensus'" sway toward keeping or doing without nuclear power plants.
