TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Mawar, classified as a Category 2 typhoon, is rapidly approaching with significant force, raising concerns about potential heavy rainfall in Taiwan over the next 48 hours.

Forecasters suggest that the typhoon could escalate into a severe typhoon as early as today (May 23) or tomorrow morning, with a high likelihood of its trajectory shifting towards the north.

According to the latest information from the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), Typhoon Mawar is moving north-northwest at 12 kilometers per hour. Meteorologists have identified four primary potential paths for the typhoon's course.

The first path indicates a northward movement from the eastern sea, with intermittent showers expected in the northern and eastern regions. Rainfall intensity will likely escalate as the typhoon draws nearer, making this path the most probable scenario.

The second path suggests a northward turn far off the eastern coast of Taiwan, minimizing the direct impact on the island.

The third trajectory envisions the typhoon heading west and passing through the southern part of Taiwan, resulting in intermittent showers in the southwestern region. There is also a possibility of more intense afternoon thunderstorms in mountainous areas.

Should the typhoon shift northeast towards Taiwan, it could substantially replenish reservoirs in the island's central and southern regions.

The fourth path raises concerns of direct landfall or a northward trajectory along the coastal areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung, potentially leading to significant replenishment of reservoirs across Taiwan.

While Typhoon Mawar poses no immediate threat to Taiwan, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and closely monitor the weather. The varying paths could result in different intensity levels, emphasizing the need for continuous observation and preparedness.
