NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi, also the main opposition presidential nominee, reaffirmed on Monday (May 22) his opposition to Taiwan's independence and China's "one country, two systems" framework.

Hou's remarks came after Vice President William Lai, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate, challenged him to clarify his position on the 1992 Consensus.

Referencing his previous statement at a hearing in the New Taipei City Council earlier this month, Hou emphasized the importance of safeguarding Taiwan's democracy and freedom and bolstering its defense capabilities.

He also stressed the need to promote peace, prosperity, and sustainability for the nation.

Hou expressed his aspiration for national unity, saying, "my dream is to unite Taiwan," and emphasizing the significance of a united front and discouraging political divisions that fragment the country.

Hou's comments were delivered during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Banqiao Xibei Park underground parking lots in New Taipei City, Taiwan, underscoring his commitment to addressing pressing issues while outlining his vision for the nation's future.
