TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Eslite Bookstore's Xinyi store has been a popular 24-hour destination for book lovers. However, with the branch set to close in December 2023, Eslite Chairwoman Mercy Wu announced on Thursday (May 4) that the company's Songyan branch will take over and offer round-the-clock service.
According to Mercy, "Eslite Songyan store is a part of the Taipei Cultural and Creative Building BOT project, so the lease term is 50-year-long, which means the store will remain the 24-hour bookstore forever." The Songyan branch is in the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, surrounded by movie theaters, department stores, hotels, and restaurants.
The Eslite Songyan store will undergo a large-scale remodeling, with the total number of books increasing three-fold to over 100,000 different items — equivalent to the amount of the Dunnan store, which closed in mid-2020. The decision has delighted many people, as the store's location will likely attract visitors from the East District and Xinyi District.
Mercy explained the decision: "Sonyan store's location is impeccable as the commercial district near Taipei Dome is expected to attract people. It is why we did not choose Eslite Nanxi Store eventually." Previously, local media speculated that Eslite Nanxi Store would become the next 24-hour bookstore.
