NEW YORK (TVBS News) — Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen arrived at the Lotte Hotel in New York City on Wednesday to a mixed reception. While supporters greeted her warmly, some anti-Taiwan independence protestors had gathered across the street.
Tsai is in New York to meet with overseas Taiwanese representatives, and her visit is seen as an opportunity to strengthen ties between Taiwan and the United States. After visiting New York, Tsai will travel to Central America and California before returning home on April 7.
Despite tensions with China, Tsai has continued to promote Taiwan's interests on the international stage, and her visit to the United States is seen as a significant opportunity for her to do so.
