NANJING (TVBS News) — Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou called for peace between Taiwan and China on Wednesday (March 29).
Speaking to the media at a briefing, the former president visited the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall and attended a memorial service as part of his trip to China.
In response to media speculation about the possibility of war between the two sides, Ma emphasized the importance of both sides avoiding such a scenario.
"Both sides of the Taiwan Strait should try to avoid war," he commented. "Once a war occurs, nothing can compensate for the losses."
Ma has long advocated for peace and understanding between Taiwan and China.
In 2017, he took to Facebook to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre and to express his view that "there are no winners in war."
Ma's message comes amid ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, with both sides engaged in a war of words and military posturing.
