Twinnen in Taiwan: Fusion flavors shine on Yongkang Street (TVBS News)
Embark on a culinary adventure along Taipei's Yongkang Street, where a fusion of Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese flavors comes to life with the "Twinnen in Taiwan" — A vlog about the life of two exchange students from San Francisco in Taiwan. Discover the best of Taipei's diverse cuisine, from savory scallion pancakes and classic milk tea to Michelin-recognized Shanghainese dishes and flavorful shaved ice.

In Taipei's Da'an district, Yongkang Street, renowned for its diverse culinary scene, offers a taste of the city's rich food heritage influenced by Taiwanese, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. As enthusiastic food explorers, we embarked on a gastronomic journey to sample the best of Taipei's flavors. Our adventure included visits to three restaurants, a street food stall, a tea house, and a shaved ice shop, each reflecting the multifaceted influences on Taiwanese cuisine.

Our culinary exploration began at Tian Jin Onion Pancake, a popular street stall known for its flaky, savory scallion pancakes, a dish with Chinese roots. On our way to our next destination, we enjoyed classic Taiwanese milk tea from SOMA Tea, reputed to be the best in Taiwan. The Dutch influenced the addition of milk to black tea in Taiwan, a tradition evident in the delightful milk tea and mocktails we savored.

Next, we ventured into the Qingtian Street neighborhood, often referred to as the "Emerald of Taipei" for its beautifully preserved Japanese-style buildings. Dining at Qingtian 76, a restaurant housed in a 90-year-old Japanese-style building, we appreciated the blend of history and cuisine, enjoying tea and ice cream in its serene outdoor setting.

Our main meal was at Lao Zhang Beef Noodles, where we indulged in one of Taiwan's signature dishes, beef noodle soup. The dish's combination of chewy noodles, rich broth, and tender beef showcased the Taiwanese culinary tradition, untouched by external influences.

As the rain began, we returned to Yongkang Street for dinner at Hao Kung Tao Chin Chi Yuan, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized restaurant. Specializing in Shanghainese cuisine, particularly xiaolongbao and dumplings, the restaurant impressed us, especially with its greens. Our culinary journey concluded with mango shaved ice at Smoothie House, a famed establishment recognized by international media. This Taiwanese take on shaved ice, flavored and topped with seasonal ingredients, was a highlight of our Taipei experience.

Yongkang Street's diverse and delicious offerings, rooted in a blend of cultural influences, provided an unforgettable culinary journey through Taipei's rich food history.
