Taiwan unveils Young Adult Culture Vouchers

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen, in her visit to her high school alma mater Zhongshan Girls High School, on Tuesday (June 6), urged young adults to embrace cultural activities using the Ministry of Culture's (MOC) Young Adult Culture Vouchers. 

These vouchers were launched by a special joint graduation ceremony organized by the MOC. President Tsai addressed the students from Zhongshan Girls High School, Jianguo High School, and Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, encouraging them to utilize the vouchers at various cultural, artistic, and entertainment venues as they transition into adulthood and "embrace their Taiwanese identity."

President Tsai expressed her desire for the students to explore their interests and contribute to revitalizing the art and cultural industry. "I want to encourage all the students to pursue their dreams," Tsai stated. "Be courageous in your endeavors, explore new experiences, and discover your passions."

The culture vouchers can be redeemed at various establishments, including bookstores, museums, and movie theaters, and will remain valid until June 30, 2024. Eligible individuals, Taiwanese citizens, and qualifying foreigners born between September 1, 2001, and December 31, 2005, can register on the Culture Points app for 1,200 credits.

Minister of Culture, Shih Che, expressed the ministry's target usage rate of at least 60% for the vouchers. Furthermore, considering their potential benefits, the government is contemplating distributing these vouchers annually.

The MOC drew inspiration for this policy from similar initiatives in European countries like Germany, Italy, Spain, and France. These nations have implemented "cultural vouchers" for young adults to provide opportunities for experiencing art and entertainment, bolster the cultural industry, and foster a deeper appreciation for the arts.
