TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) criticized the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) during the launch of the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC, 國網雲端算力中心) at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (南部科學園區) on Friday (Dec. 12). He accused the opposition parties of passing legislation that severely impacts national security, social stability, and fiscal sustainability.
Lai pointed out that the KMT and TPP blocked the act on procurement aimed at enhancing the nation's defense resilience and asymmetric capabilities, and the Act Governing the Allocation of Government Revenues and Expenditures (財劃法). Instead of improving these bills, they amended the Constitutional Litigation Act (修改憲法訴訟法) and froze the Constitutional Court. He emphasized that the opposition-led legislature should uphold constitutional principles by supervising the Executive Yuan (行政院) and supporting beneficial legislation.
Lai noted that the Legislative Yuan's (立法院) actions contradicted these principles, as evidenced by last year's unconstitutional ruling on the Act on Exercising Legislative Yuan Powers (立法委員職權行使法). He urged opposition parties to prioritize national interests through cooperation, stating that democracy is party politics. Since taking office on May 20 last year, Lai has focused on policies for national security, economic progress, and better care for citizens.
Lai highlighted Premier Cho Jung-tai's (卓榮泰) tireless efforts in disaster and epidemic response, including earthquakes, typhoons, and African swine fever. He warned that the opposition-led legislation would hamper the central government's adaptability and announced plans to convene the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) caucus to address the situation. Lai stressed the need for all parties to prioritize national interests and work together for public support.
