TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chinese Culture University (中國文化大學) shifted all classes to remote learning on Wednesday (Oct. 22) due to severe weather conditions affecting Taipei and New Taipei City. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a heavy rain warning, prompting the university to prioritize safety by adopting distance education standards.
The university announced the decision after a landslide blocked Jingshan Road near Qingtiangang on Tuesday (Oct. 21). However, students expressed frustration when the announcement arrived at 7:20 a.m., as many had already begun their journey to campus, causing significant traffic congestion on Yangde Boulevard.
The situation worsened when a power outage struck the dormitories on Tuesday night, leaving students unable to sleep. Many students, overwhelmed by academic pressures, had opted to stay overnight on campus despite the challenging conditions.
The university clarified that administrative staff would also work remotely, except for those involved in essential campus safety and repair tasks. The harsh weather on Yangmingshan (陽明山) continues to challenge students and the public, with strong winds rendering umbrellas useless. As the storm showed no signs of abating, the community questioned why classes were not entirely suspended.
