TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City hosted the 2025 International Youth Climate Action Forum (2025國際青年氣候論壇) on Sept. 11, drawing young leaders and experts from the United States, Japan, South Korea, and other countries to discuss climate change strategies. Speaking at the conference, Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) emphasized Taiwan's largest city's commitment to climate action, marking the fifth consecutive year of hosting this international forum.

Mayor Hou also congratulated the winners of the "2nd Youth Climate Action Creative Competition" (第2屆青年氣候行動創意徵件). According to the organizers, the top prize went to a team from Kang Chiao International School (康橋國際學校) for their project on recycling used oil. Students from National Chung Cheng University (國立中正大學) received the silver award for its youth leadership initiative, while teams from National Taiwan University (國立臺灣大學) and other universities earned honorable mentions.

Mayor Hou praised the innovative proposals focusing on the circular economy and environmental education, underscoring the vital role of youth in advancing the net-zero transition. He noted that New Taipei City aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The city reached its goal of becoming a coal-free city in 2022, as well as publishing a net-zero action white paper and a voluntary local review report.

The forum provided an international platform for young people to exchange climate action outcomes, fostering innovation and courage in pursuing climate initiatives. Through international dialogue and sharing local action case studies, the forum aimed to strengthen youth knowledge and action against climate change to reach a net-zero future.

Taiwan's central government has also set a net-zero emissions goal by 2050, with an intermediate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 38% by 2035. Environmental groups have called for greater ambition in emissions reduction strategy while acknowledging widespread popular support for the net-zero goal. The emissions reduction push is crucial to Taiwan as an island nation vulnerable to natural disasters, including the recent string of typhoons this summer, which scientists say climate change may have intensified. ◼
