TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Weather Administration CWA (中央氣象署) issued high-temperature warnings Monday (Aug. 18) morning, placing Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Changhua County under orange alerts. The weather agency warned temperatures could reach 36 degrees Celsius (97°F) across these metropolitan areas at 7:31 a.m. The alert system reflects escalating heat concerns as Taiwan enters peak summer conditions.
Taichung City, Tainan City, and Pingtung County received yellow alerts, with authorities urging residents to take sun protection precautions and maintain hydration. The weather administration specifically advised vulnerable populations including elderly residents, children, chronic illness patients, and outdoor workers to limit unnecessary activities. Officials recommended employing cooling strategies such as fans or ice packs to combat the dangerous heat conditions.
Southern cloud systems will deliver intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms to southeastern Taiwan and Pingtung area Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 19), according to CWA forecasts. Penghu and Kinmen islands face occasional precipitation, while other regions including Matsu (馬祖) will experience partly cloudy to sunny weather. Afternoon thunderstorms remain possible across most areas despite generally favorable conditions.
Meteorologists predict short-duration, extremely heavy rainfall across southern Taiwan and central mountain regions, with overnight showers expected in western areas. The southern coast and Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) face potential swell wave conditions over the next 48 hours, triggering marine safety advisories. Coastal residents and maritime activities should exercise heightened caution during this weather pattern. ◼
