TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) warned Monday (Aug. 11) that Typhoon Podul's trajectory has shifted significantly, raising the likelihood of impact on Taiwan to over 80 percent. Wu predicted in his National Central University (NCU, 中央大學) column that the typhoon will reach Taiwan Wednesday (Aug. 13) and pass through Thursday (Aug. 14). The storm could potentially make landfall in eastern Taiwan's Hualien or Taitung counties.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's meteorological agency, reported that Typhoon Podul's center was positioned 1,410 kilometers southeast of Taipei at 2 a.m., advancing westward at 23 kilometers per hour. Wu observed that recent forecast maps indicate a slight southern adjustment in the storm's trajectory, increasing impact probability. The meteorologist emphasized that the typhoon will maintain its strength until landfall and urged close monitoring, noting that the exact landing point between Hualien and Taitung may shift based on evolving international models and official forecasts.
The weather administration issued a high-temperature alert for Taipei and New Taipei City, forecasting temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius (96.8°F) around noon. Wu mentioned that conditions will remain sunny and hot over the next two days, with increased southern moisture creating chances of localized showers or thunderstorms in mountainous regions. These weather patterns could potentially extend to some lowland areas across northern Taiwan.
