TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan basks in warm, spring-like conditions Thursday (April 17) as temperatures climb to seasonal highs, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national meteorological agency. Western regions could reach 31 to 32 degrees Celsius (87.8 to 89.6°F), while eastern areas expect more moderate highs of 27 to 28°C (80.6 to 82.4°F). Overnight lows will settle between 18 and 21°C (64.4 to 69.8°F) island-wide.
The pleasant conditions stem from a southerly wind pattern delivering mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies throughout the day, meteorologists said. By afternoon, however, brief sporadic showers will develop across eastern regions, the southern Hengchun Peninsula, and mountainous terrain. Taiwan's outlying islands will experience varying conditions, with Penghu seeing temperatures between 21 and 28°C (69.8 to 82.4°F), Kinmen between 18 and 26°C (64.4 to 78.8°F), and Matsu between 19 and 25°C (66.2 to 77°F).
The weather agency's extended forecast shows a gradual shift in conditions, with increased cloud cover developing Friday and higher humidity levels arriving Saturday. A weather system will advance across northern Taiwan's waters by Sunday, triggering isolated showers and possible thunderstorms across northern regions. The unsettled pattern continues into next week, with another weather front expected Tuesday that will bring scattered precipitation to central and northeastern areas, while western regions face intermittent rainfall.
The weather pattern will undergo a more significant transformation by Wednesday as the approaching front combines with a northeast monsoon, pushing temperatures downward. Northern regions will see daytime highs fall to 24°C (75.2°F), while other parts of Taiwan experience a 2 to 4°C (3.6 to 7.2°F) temperature decrease. Meteorologists warn the unstable conditions will persist from Thursday through Saturday, with elevated moisture levels maintaining cooler temperatures and producing scattered showers or thunderstorms across the island. ★
