TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a cold surge alert on Monday (March 17) for eight counties and cities across Taiwan, warning of the intense cold front sweeping southward. Experts predict temperatures could drop to 10 degrees Celsius or lower in areas north of Miaoli and in Yilan, impacting a broad region with noticeable cooling.
Meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩) emphasized that the coldest period will occur over the next two days. The administration designated New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, and Yilan County with an orange alert for extremely cold conditions. Meanwhile, Keelung City, Taipei City, and Hsinchu City received a yellow alert for cold weather.
During nighttime and early morning hours, northern and northeastern Taiwan will experience temperatures as low as 11 to 12 degrees Celsius, while daytime highs will only reach 12 to 14 degrees. Other regions will see slightly warmer conditions, with central and eastern areas reaching 16 to 18 degrees and southern Taiwan peaking at 20 to 21 degrees.
Lin noted on Facebook that the cold air mass most significantly affects northern and northeastern regions, with increased day-night temperature differences in central and southern areas. The cold front will gradually weaken by March 20, leading to warmer daytime temperatures. However, Lin advised caution due to low temperatures at night and in the early morning, especially in open coastal and mountainous areas.
