KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Shoushan Zoo (壽山動物園) in Kaohsiung announced on Friday (March 7) that they recently celebrated the birthdays of its star black bears, Bobby (波比) and Hei Pi (黑皮) with a lively event featuring street performers. The zoo invited street artist "Green Yan Cello" (綠龍與他的大提琴) to serenade the bears, creating a festive atmosphere that prompted Bobby to sway to the music.
Bobby turned 21, while Hei Pi reached 23, marking milestones celebrated with the presence of retired zookeeper Chiu Shih-chu (邱石柱). Known as the "super black bear dad," Chiu shared his experiences and displayed handwritten journals and photographs documenting his care for the bears. The zoo currently houses four Formosan black bears, including the popular pair Bobby and Hei Pi.
Kaohsiung's Department of Tourism Director, Kao Min-lin (高閔琳), emphasized the event's role in raising awareness about wildlife conservation, noting that Formosan black bears are endangered. Kao remarked that they hope this celebration will inspire more people to care for animal conservation. Last year, the zoo's black bears inspired Kaohsiung's tourism ambassador, "Kaohsiung Bear," which became Taiwan's most popular mascot.
Green Yan Cello, a frequent visitor to the zoo since college, expressed his admiration for Bobby and his desire to contribute to the welfare of the zoo's animals. As the community reflects on these cherished bears, the event underscores the importance of conservation efforts and the zoo's role in promoting awareness.
