TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Micron Technology Inc. (美光) announced the appointment of former TSMC (台積電) Chairman Mark Liu (劉德音) to its board on Thursday (March 6). The decision aimed to leverage his expertise to expand its business and address the growing opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI), from data centers to edge computing.
Micron Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra praised Liu in a press release, describing him as a visionary leader with deep technical knowledge and business acumen. Mehrotra noted Liu's leadership at one of the world's most advanced semiconductor companies and his experience in operating large-scale wafer fabs. "His experience will help guide Micron as we scale our business to address the growing opportunities unleashed by AI — from the data center to the edge," said Mehrotra.
Currently, Liu chairs the multi-strategy investment fund J&M Copper Beech Ventures. He also founded the Technology Competitiveness and Industrial Policy Center (科技競爭力與產業政策中心, TCIP) at UC Berkeley (加州大學柏克萊分校). The think tank gathers experts from academia, industry, and nonprofit organizations to discuss technology, economic, and policy issues, providing independent academic advice to policymakers and legislators.
Liu joined TSMC in 1993 as an engineering deputy director, establishing its first 8-inch wafer fab, and later created TSMC's first 12-inch wafer fab. He succeeded TSMC founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) as chairman in June 2018 and retired from the position in June 2024.
