TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 大陸委員會) underscored Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC, 台積電) pivotal role, pledging on Wednesday (Feb. 26) to work hand-in-hand with the industry in navigating the challenges sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's new policies. The government remains determined to safeguard Taiwan's leadership in advanced technology, according to the agency.
Earlier that day, China's Taiwan Affairs Office (國台辦) accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) of treating Taiwan's semiconductor industry as a gift, claiming TSMC has become "America Semiconductor." The office noted a rapid increase in public concern over the potential transformation of TSMC into a U.S.-based entity, criticizing the government for allegedly selling out Taiwan's interests for personal gain.
Amid these accusations, Taiwanese businesses have voiced their opinions. TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家) addressed these concerns in mid-January during a speech at the National Taiwan University (NTU, 台大) EMBA program. He assured the public that TSMC could not become "America Semiconductor" and highlighted its plans to expand investments in Taiwan, underscoring its global economic significance.
As tensions rise, Taiwan's focus remains on navigating these geopolitical challenges while safeguarding its technological advancements.
