TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁), the legislative caucus leader of the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨), unveiled plans to propose referendums addressing the abolition of the death penalty and air pollution as a strategic countermeasure to recent recall efforts on March 5.
Fu emphasized the KMT's determination to challenge the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The Central Election Commission (中選會) is required to announce the referendum by May 23, presenting a tight timeline for action.
Despite the urgency, KMT lawmakers remain optimistic about rallying public support through citizen petitions and are considering both citizen-initiated and legislative proposals, as reported by UDN.
If the KMT faces challenges meeting the petition deadline, sources indicate they may collaborate with the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 台灣民眾黨) in the Legislature to propose the referendum, which would need a majority of lawmakers present for approval.
Meanwhile, a youth-led KMT initiative to recall 12 DPP legislators has encountered setbacks during the initial petition phase, sparking frustration within the party. KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) pledged personal accountability for the situation while affirming the party's readiness in organization, publicity, and strategy.
Fu noted that the DPP has proposed four referendums with significant political implications, scheduled for Aug. 23.
