TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) criticized the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP, 民進黨) strategy to execute mass recalls of Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislators on Thursday (March 6), urging President Lai Ching-te to maintain neutrality.
Lu challenged the merging of party and state interests, pointing out that some DPP legislators hinted at potential intervention by President Lai. She advocated for recalls to focus solely on lawmakers with clear misconduct, instead of targeting KMT members en masse due to their differing political stances. Lu cautioned that indiscriminate recalls could result in endless election cycles, draining national resources.
Expressing concerns over the anonymity of recall groups, Lu speculated about possible hidden influences driving social movements and called for efforts to curb societal unrest.
The legislative environment remains fraught with tension, as no single party holds a majority. The KMT and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) have allied to counter the DPP, causing significant parliamentary gridlocks with the Executive Yuan. Meanwhile, the DPP has initiated recalls against KMT regional legislators, further intensifying the political standoff.
