TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 大陸委員會) on Tuesday (March 4) criticized China's concept of "Chinese-style democracy," asserting that it does not exist and is merely a one-party dictatorship under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP, 共產黨). The council emphasized that the people of Taiwan are well aware of this reality.
Zhou Qi (周琪), a deputy to the National People's Congress in China, announced plans to invite Taiwanese youth to participate in activities aimed at understanding "Chinese-style democracy." Zhou stated that cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Strait remain vibrant despite obstacles set by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) and expressed optimism for significant development within the framework of Chinese traditional culture.
MAC responded to China's announcement by dismissing Zhou's comments as mere propaganda, noting that Zhou does not have Taiwanese status. The council stressed its support for healthy and orderly educational exchanges across the strait, provided they comply with governmental regulations.
The council also warned that the CCP often uses exchanges for united front work against Taiwan, urging Taiwanese youth to avoid participating in activities with such characteristics and to be mindful of the risks and personal safety when traveling to China.
