TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator on Thursday criticized the term "China Taipei," calling it a "legal framework" designed by China. A controversy erupted in Taiwan after a China's Fudan University (復旦大學) student referred to the Taiwanese baseball team as "China Taipei" (中國台北) during a visit organized by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation (馬英九基金會).
Hsiao Hsu-tsen (蕭旭岑), the foundation's CEO, defended the term as "habitual language." However, DPP Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) argued on Facebook that China's statements are calculated to deny Taiwan and even "Chinese Taipei" (中華台北) and assert Taiwan's legal status under China. Shen emphasized that these activities, supported by Taiwanese media and public images, fuel China's future legal battles internationally.
He also responded to Hsiao's comment against bullying the 20-year-old student by citing past incidents involving young individuals, such as Chou Tzu-yu (周子瑜) and children affected by China's actions, urging Hsiao to address Xi Jinping (習近平) about targeting youth. Shen has questioned the Mainland Affairs Council (陸委會) and the Ministry of Culture (文化部) about the risks of allowing Chinese students in Taiwan, stating his stance remains unchanged.
