TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Hsiao Hsu-tsen (蕭旭岑), CEO of the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation (馬英九基金會), on Wednesday (Dec. 4) expressed regret over the Mainland Affairs Council's (MAC, 陸委會) decision to take administrative action against the visiting Chinese student group in Taiwan. Hsiao emphasized that the visit adhered to all regulations.

Protests erupted at National Taiwan University on Tuesday as students chanted, "This is not 'China, Taipei,'" drawing attention to the group's presence. The MAC has announced plans for an administrative investigation, citing potential violations by the foundation after students used terms like "China, Taipei," and "motherland" during media interviews.

Hsiao urged the council to allow the foundation to explain and demanded a basis for any penalties, warning that unjustified actions could hinder cross-strait exchanges. MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) stated that the group's comments might breach regulations, and the council will gather information before proceeding.

The Ma Ying-jeou Foundation invited faculty and students from seven Chinese universities, led by Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee Chairperson of the University Council Qiu Yong (邱勇), including Olympic gold medalists Ma Long (馬龍) and Yang Qian (楊倩). The group arrived in Taiwan on Nov. 27 and visited the Hsinchu Science Park on Wednesday (Dec. 4), where Yu Ching-chiu (游靜秋), secretary-general of the park's administration, showcased innovative technology products.

Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Legislator Lee Yen-hsiu (李彥秀) also advised the council to consider administrative actions cautiously. She warned that excessive politicization could harm cross-strait dialogue. She emphasized the need for continued dialogue and expressed confidence in Taiwan's democracy, urging the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) to maintain open communication.
