TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City is exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance public transportation systems, media reported on Wednesday (Feb. 5). The initiative aims to alleviate the burden on bus drivers and improve safety by implementing smart bus and station attendant systems, according to the Transportation Department , New Taipei City Government (新北市交通局).
New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) visited the Banqiao Bus Station yesterday to address driver shortages caused by declining birth rates and retirements. The city government has increased bus fares to NT$25.0487 to offset operational costs and raise driver salaries before the Chinese New Year. The Transportation Bureau has tasked the Bus Association with developing the AI systems, with companies pledging to start research this year.
Li Chien-wen (李建文), general manager of Capital Bus (首都客運), identified in-bus and bus stop systems as research priorities to prevent driver distraction and provide detailed passenger information. He emphasized that "Taipei and New Taipei City Bus Associations are promoting AI systems to improve driver safety and retention rates. They recently held a meeting to discuss the implementation of these systems." The Transportation Bureau plans to study driver and passenger habits to determine system requirements, having already reached agreements with operators.
