TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC, 高鐵) achieved record-breaking numbers in 2024, with annual ridership reaching 78.25 million and daily averages of 214,000 passengers. THSRC president attributed this success to passenger support, and emphasized the rail's role as a vital north-south transport link. To manage increased demand, THSRC plans to introduce off-peak discounts, such as 12% off tickets, targeting travelers with flexible schedules.
THSRC President James Jeng (鄭光遠) highlighted the need to boost weekday ridership, currently below 60%, compared to weekend figures that reach 80%. He expressed hope for further revenue and profit growth in 2025.
THSR Taipei Station leads in passenger flow among the 12 stations, accounting for 20% to 30% of total traffic. Taichung Station follows with 70% to 80% of Taipei's numbers, and Kaohsiung Station ranks third with slightly lower figures. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce new-generation trains in 2026, coinciding with the completion of the Zuoying base's second vehicle maintenance plant. The first phase of construction, involving foundation work, is set for completion in January 2025.
