TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) inspected the Taiwan Railway Corporation's (TRC, 台鐵) Qidu depot (七堵) on Friday (Jan. 10) to review preparations for the Lunar New Year travel rush. Minister Chen urged the public to use mass transit during the holidays, emphasizing the readiness of transport services for the festive season.
During his inspection, Chen noted that train travel on both TRC and Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) has reached record highs post-pandemic. He assured the public that TRC will ensure all safety measures are in place. His visit followed a recent derailment of an E500 locomotive at the Qidu Yard, where he distributed red envelopes to depot employees. He addressed the leadership change at THSRC, mentioning that President James Jeng (鄭光遠) will temporarily replace outgoing Chairman Chiang Yao-chung (江耀宗), expressing gratitude for Chiang's contributions.
Amid declining tourist numbers, Chen recommended that travelers choose TRC, highlighting Taiwan's numerous beautiful tourist spots. He vowed that TRC will ensure all screws are tightened during the Lunar New Year, reassuring travelers of their safety. With the festive season approaching, TRC's commitment to safety and reliability remains a priority.
