TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator expressed strong dissatisfaction on Facebook over the Kuomintang's (KMT, 國民黨) decision to cut NT$10 million from school sports funding. Wu Pei-yi (吳沛憶), the DPP legislator, demanded a reasonable explanation for the cuts, asserting that the funds are crucial for grassroots schools and include expenses for basketball, volleyball, and women's softball competitions.
Wu used to be a Taipei City councilor, she recalled frequent feedback during that time from principals and parents advocating for sports budget increases. She emphasized that cutting the budget would impact many schools' subsidies and criticized KMT for not consulting local governments, schools, or parents. KMT justified the cuts by claiming a lack of explanation for budget increases, despite Wu stating that the Education and Culture Committee (立法院教育及文化委員會) had already reviewed and discussed the reports.
Wu accused the KMT of inconsistency, noting their public support for increased sports funding while proposing cuts during reviews. She highlighted that the funds include insurance costs for student-athletes starting this year. Wu urged KMT to understand grassroots realities, stating that while the DPP does not oppose oversight, reasonable justification must be provided. Otherwise, she argued, it merely demonstrates bureaucratic arrogance rather than budgetary diligence for the people.
