TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei Egg Traders Association (台北市蛋商公會) announced Tuesday (Dec. 31) a further reduction in farm egg prices by NT$2 per Taiwanese caty (斤, 600 grams), dropping from NT$24.5 to NT$22.5. Wholesalers will follow suit Thursday, lowering prices from NT$34 to NT$32. This marks the second price cut this month as egg production exceeds demand, leaving at least 2 million eggs unsold daily.
Lin Tien-lai (林天來), the Taipei City Egg Merchants Association chairman, noted that persistently high production levels have outstripped consumer demand. He added that with vegetable prices stabilizing, eggs have lost their price advantage. According to the Ministry of Agriculture (農業部), the country now has approximately 37.56 million laying hens, producing a record 127,000 boxes of eggs per day, with each box containing about 200 eggs.
Statistics from production sites indicate that daily egg production has surpassed 130,000 boxes, resulting in an overproduction of at least 2 million eggs. The association predicts another price reduction before the Lunar New Year.
