TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market opened Friday (Dec. 20) with a decline of 133 points, settling at 22,798 points amid a turbulent morning session. The weighted index fell over 100 points, with TSMC (台積電) dropping NT$10 to temporarily stand at NT$1,060. Electronics stocks showed mixed results. MediaTek (聯發科) fell NT$5 to NT$1,415, while Hon Hai (鴻海) rose NT$0.5 to NT$181.5. Wiwynn (緯穎) saw a notable increase of NT$40, reaching NT$2,710.

Optical lens stocks benefited from the AI robotics trend, displaying strong performances. Asia Optical (亞光) increased by NT$2 to NT$166.5, Canon (佳能) rose NT$3.2 to NT$64.9, and Largan Precision (玉晶光) gained NT$1 to reach NT$477. The previous day, Taiwan's weighted index closed at 22,932.25 points, a drop of 236.42 points or 1.02%. The total transaction value reached NT$418.032 billion. Foreign investors, investment trusts, and proprietary traders collectively sold NT$41.576 billion, with foreign investors alone selling NT$33.523 billion.

 

U.S. markets showed varied movements, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average ending its losing streak by rising 24 points. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield hit 4.594%, nearing a seven-month high, while the Fed hinted at fewer rate cuts next year, causing the Wall Street VIX to surge to the second highest in history.
