Taiwan stocks dip over 200 points (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market opened lower Friday (Nov. 29), dropping over 200 points to 22,202, as major stocks showed weak performance. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) led the decline, opening NT$10 lower at NT$995, a 1% decrease.

In the electronics sector, UMC's (聯電) shares fell 0.80% to NT$43.55. MediaTek (聯發科) dropped NT$25 to NT$1,230, while Hon Hai (鴻海) decreased by NT$2.5 to NT$193. Meanwhile, the shipping sector saw gains, with Wan Hai (萬海) rising NT$0.8 to NT$84.5, Evergreen (長榮) increasing by NT$ 2 to NT$219, and Yang Ming (陽明) climbing NT$0.9 to NT$73.4.

 

Tu Hsin-pei (杜欣霈), a fund manager at PGIM Small & Medium Cap Fund (PGIM保德信中小型股基金), noted that Taiwan benefits from an economic recovery driven by AI opportunities. Du expected AI to continue as a main investment theme in Taiwan's stock market, despite current risks from Trump's policies.

The U.S. stock markets were closed Thursday for Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, the Dow Jones fell 138.25 points, or 0.31%, to 44,722.06. The Nasdaq dropped 115.1 points, or 0.6%, to 19,060.48. The S&P 500 decreased 22.89 points, or 0.38%, to 5,998.74, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 74.55 points, or 1.51%, to 4,853.01.
