TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A senior official from the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) highlighted on Friday (Dec. 6) the crucial need for positive cross-strait relations to ensure fruitful exchanges and open communication. This statement builds anticipation for the upcoming Taipei and Shanghai Twin City Forum on Dec. 17, where hopes are high for advancing collaboration and mutual understanding.
During a routine press conference at the council, MAC Deputy Minister and spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) noted that the Taipei City Government had submitted an invitation list, which is under review and verification. Liang stressed that visiting Chinese Communist Party officials should refrain from making political statements or comments that could harm Taiwan's status and adhere to the etiquette expected of guests.
When asked if Chinese military drills might impact the forum or lead to the rejection of Shanghai's delegation, Liang reiterated the need for a conducive atmosphere for dialogue. Despite Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng's (龔正) absence, deputy mayor, Hua Yuan (華源), will reportedly attend the forum. Regarding concerns about political statements during the forum, Liang responded that after years of interaction, both sides understand the boundaries of acceptable discourse.
