NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Education Department (新北市教育局) announced on Friday (Dec. 6) that school janitors can apply to delay their retirement, addressing workforce needs and job security. Currently, 289 janitors work in New Taipei City schools, with 50 set to retire in 2024. The initiative allows experienced janitors to continue contributing their skills, while the department highlighted their essential roles in maintaining campus cleanliness and performing repairs.
Eligible janitors can apply for retirement delays through mutual agreement if their schools require additional manpower. The department stated that extensions would be approved in six-month or 12-month increments, with salaries, bonuses, and other benefits remaining unchanged. New Taipei City Education Department Commissioner Chang Ming-wen (張明文) announced plans to hold an explanatory meeting by mid-December to clarify and simplify the application process. The department aims to approve the first batch of retirement delay applications by Jan. 16, 2025.
