TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Economic Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) expressed optimism during a Legislative Yuan Economic Committee session Wednesday (Nov. 27) about raising the minimum wage for listed companies to NT$50,000 by 2027. Kuo highlighted the government's plan to increase military and public sector salaries by 3% next year, despite only 11% of companies in Taiwan expressing willingness to follow suit.
The minister emphasized the importance of a NT$40,000 minimum wage for listed companies and urged profit-sharing improvements. He added that the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) has already engaged in discussions with the Executive Yuan to encourage salary adjustments across the corporate sector.
Addressing state-owned enterprises like Taiwan Power Company (台電) and Taiwan Water Corporation (台水), Kuo noted that the current starting salary is around NT$30,000. He aims to increase it to NT$40,000 next year. Kuo's statements reflect a broader push to ensure equitable compensation across various sectors.
In response to the minister's statement, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Lai Jui-lung (賴瑞隆) called on the Ministry of Economic Affairs to submit a comprehensive report within a month. He requested details on the legal and policy aspects of salary adjustments and encouraged the ministry to provide more support and incentives for businesses. As discussions continue, the focus remains on aligning corporate pay structures with economic growth expectations.
