Kuan warns against reliance on TSMC (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As the U.S. prepares to elect a new president, Kuan Chun-ming (管中閔), former president of National Taiwan University (台大), warned on Monday (Nov. 4) against assuming that Taiwan or the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) is irreplaceable, especially amid shifting U.S. policies.

Kuan emphasized the need for Taiwan to adopt a comprehensive grand strategy to reduce dependence on the Chinese and American markets. He advocated for industrial diversification and preparation for long-term challenges in the semiconductor industry.

Speaking at the "The Strategic Assessment of Taiwan's Security in The Indo-Pacific Region" (當前區域安全形勢戰略評估論壇) Roundtable Discussion, Kuan noted that regardless of who wins the White House, a tougher stance toward Beijing will likely intensify, potentially leading to more severe measures impacting China's economy.

Kuan pointed out potential repercussions for Taiwan if the U.S.-China trade war escalates, which could result in decreased exports to mainland China and slower economic growth. He mentioned that a Trump victory might bring more aggressive trade policies, including general tariffs. Hence, Kuan further advised Taiwan to prepare for such scenarios by developing a more comprehensive strategy and sub-strategies for export and industrial diversification.
