TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Northeasterly winds have brought significant rainfall to Taiwan's Keelung north coast and Yilan on Thursday (Oct. 17), while other areas experienced cloudy to sunny weather. The Greater Taipei area, eastern regions, and Hengchun Peninsula will see scattered showers, according to meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮).
Wu noted that reduced moisture on the east resulted in clearer skies, with a slight chance of afternoon showers in mountainous areas. Daytime temperatures remained warm, but conditions turned cooler in the morning and evening. On Friday, similar weather patterns are expected, with partly cloudy skies and occasional afternoon showers in the mountains.
The weekend will bring a shift as the northeast monsoon moves south on Saturday and Sunday, causing local showers in northern and eastern regions. Wu highlighted that heavier rainfall is anticipated along the north coast and in the northeast, with a noticeable drop in temperatures in northern Taiwan.
By Monday, drier conditions will prevail, leading to mostly cloudy skies with sunny intervals and rising temperatures. However, brief showers may return to the north coast and northeast later in the day.
The northeast monsoon will strengthen from Tuesday to Thursday, increasing moisture and the likelihood of rain in northern and eastern areas, with heavier showers starting Tuesday night. Wu advised that temperatures will drop gradually, making it essential to stay warm on Wednesday and Thursday.
Looking ahead, Wu mentioned the latest European and U.S. models, which suggest the potential development of one to two tropical disturbances by 8 p.m. on Oct. 25, though model adjustments continue. Further observation is necessary.
