KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) criticized China's military intimidation on Wednesday (Oct. 9), asserting it only drives a wedge between people across the Taiwan Strait.
The Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) reported that China plans to launch a carrier rocket from Xichang (西昌) on Taiwan's National Day (Oct. 10), which will pass through Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
Chen reiterated the importance of maintaining peaceful, economic, and cultural exchanges despite differences and warned that military exercises or intimidation would further alienate people on both sides.
He emphasized that any cross-strait exchanges must adhere to principles of dignity and equality, arguing that intimidation is not a virtuous cycle.
In response to Typhoon Krathon's impact on Kaohsiung, Chen identified removing fallen trees as a priority in the ongoing recovery efforts. He assured that the city government would expedite the distribution of disaster relief funds.
Addressing power outages in areas like Daliao (大寮), he attributed the issue to insufficient grid resilience. He recommended that Taiwan Power Company (台灣電力公司) assess the feasibility of underground cabling to prevent it from happening again.
