KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — An AMD (超微半導體) top executive led a team to meet with Kaohsiung City Government officials on Tuesday (Aug. 20) to discuss future investment plans. AMD plans to establish its first Asian R&D center in Taiwan, with both Tainan and Kaohsiung vying for the opportunity.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) emphasized the city's full support for AMD's potential R&D center during his meeting with AMD Senior Vice President David Wang (王啟尚). He promised to create a stable and friendly investment environment to help businesses thrive.
Mayor Chen also highlighted the Asia New Bay Area (亞洲新灣區), which offers incentives for corporate space and talent recruitment to attract international high-level R&D talent. These measures aim to bolster Kaohsiung's appeal as a prime location for AMD's new center.
Economic Development Bureau Director-general Liao Tai-hsiang (廖泰翔) noted that the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) has already approved AMD's potential investment plan.
The project will focus on developing advanced AI software and hardware technologies. Liao expressed excitement about collaborating with AMD, given Kaohsiung's resources like ASE Technology Holding (日月光) and National Sun Yat-sen University (中山大學).
As AMD deliberates its decision, Kaohsiung's proactive approach and strategic initiatives may be crucial in attracting the tech giant's investment. The outcome could significantly impact the city's technological landscape and economic growth.
