TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Actor Sunny Wang (王陽明) is facing backlash over controversial remarks made during the promotion of the gangster film "Like Father Like Son" (角頭-大橋頭). On Monday (Aug. 19) night, producer Red Chang (張威縯) defended Wang on Facebook, asserting that Wang did not intend to offend anyone.
During the promotion event, Wang declined to make a heart gesture with a female fan, stating, "I don't do sissy (娘砲) gestures, nor do I use beauty filters," which sparked heated discussions.
The Taiwan Gender Equality Education Association (台灣性平教育協會) condemned Wang's comments, arguing that they negatively impact those who do not conform to mainstream gender norms. The association emphasized that one does not need to belittle others to assert themselves.
In response to online criticism, Wang claimed that the backlash stemmed from a misunderstanding of the movie promotions. He thanked the public for their attention and did not address the criticism directly.
Despite Wang's response, public outrage persisted, prompting producer Chang to reiterate that Wang did not mean to offend anyone. Chang also revealed that he had instructed Wang to fully immerse himself in his character during the promotion period. Chang concluded by admitting fault, asking for forgiveness if anyone was offended.
The controversy underscores the ongoing debate about gender expression and respect in public discourse.
