HSINCHU (TVBS News) — Hsinchu Zoo (新竹市立動物園) filed a report on Wednesday (Aug. 14) after a video surfaced showing a visitor feeding hippos with potato chips, sparking public outrage.

The zoo was initially criticized after a nearby staff member said "I had scolded the hippo before about eating whatever comes their way," in response to the issue.

A witness expressed fury, condemning the staff member's response after they saw a man pouring two bags of potato chips into a hippo's mouth.

However, the zoo released a statement on the same day, explaining that the staff member did not respond inappropriately during the incident.

Hsinchu Zoo revealed it has since provided the footage to the police and plans to conduct follow-up interviews and take action based on animal protection laws.

The zoo urged visitors to respect the park's rules and refrain from feeding the animals, as improper feeding can lead to digestive issues, illness, or even death for the animals. Hsinchu Zoo continues to monitor the animals' conditions and will enhance care and medical capabilities to prevent unnecessary incidents.

Staff and volunteers will increase patrols and education efforts to ensure the animals' health and safety.
