NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A lightning strike caused a power outage at Nanya Technology Corporation (南亞科技) on Tuesday (Aug. 13), leading to an estimated loss of NT$300 million to NT$500 million, as it would take two to three days to resume normal operations. The outage, which struck at 1:15 p.m., disrupted operations and damaged wafers, requiring equipment repairs and halting production.
Nanya Technology immediately activated emergency response measures to ensure employee safety. The power disruption stemmed from a 161kV high-voltage supply anomaly caused by the lightning strike, according to Taiwan Power Company (台灣電力公司).
The same thunderstorm affected numerous areas in New Taipei City, including Xinzhuang District (新莊區) and Shulin District (樹林區), as well as Taoyuan City's Guishan District (龜山區). Taiwan Power Company reported that the storm tripped a 161kV transmission line, causing a power outage at the Huilong (迴龍) electrical substation. The blackout impacted 44,000 households, but power was restored by 1:26 p.m. through alternative supply routes.
